"The Most Highly Anticipated Olympic Games in History!

The construction of the Great Wall may pale in comparison to the elaborate preparations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in China. An estimated $40 billion will be spent on what may be the single most expensive sporting event in human history. The scope of these Games even extends to Mt. Everest, where months of road work is clearing a path for the torch as it passes through en route to Beijing! As head-turning new stadiums rise over the Beijing skyline and 48,000 Chinese taxi drivers strive to master basic English, it's clear that the Chinese are pulling out all the stops for their moment on the world stage

.

By reserving your Olympic Games coins you can share in the excitement of what may be the most significant event in modern Olympic history. It is an honor to be one of only two American distributors of the 2008 Beijing Official Precious Metal Commemorative Coins. However, we were shocked to learn that only 60,000 six-coin sets of each series would be minted. Even more shocking was the fact that less than 5,000 sets were allocated for the American market. That's a miniscule quantity compared to the estimated 130 million coin collectors in the U.S. Upon release, the sets immediately sold out in China. They are sure to be a quick sell-out in the U.S. as well!

Limited U.S. Allocation Means Huge Collector Appeal!

The Beijing 2008 six-coin sets are comprised of two Gold and four Silver legal tender coins, six in total. The two Gold coins are minted in pure .9999 Fine Gold, each with a flawless Gem Proof finish. Their stunning designs are captured in frosted cameo relief against shimmering mirror fields. The four pure .999 Fine Silver Proofs have the added distinction of being highlighted with dramatic accents of color.

Each 6-Coin Commemorative Set Includes:
- Two .33 troy ounce .9999 Fine Gold Proof coins
- Four 1 troy ounce .999 Fine Silver Proofs
- High-gloss Blond Wooden Display Box with silk-wrapped outer case
- Official Mint Certificate of Authenticity for each Proof

The Series I Set

An ancient equestrian and an archer are featured on the two Gold Proofs. The four Silver Proofs depict the ancient Chinese children's games of kite flying, hoop rolling, shuttlecock kicking and goat jumping."

What I think?

.66oz gold($540) and 4oz silver($61) is about $601.
They are asking $2200.
I bought a 1/2oz official olympic commerative coin from the 1984 LA Olympics last april for spot plus $5.
I think you will have to wait a long time to sell these for a profit, but I'm no expert. At $3000/oz gold and $100/oz silver you will have made a $200 profit when you sell these.

Don't touch em.

All Olympic coins end up trading for bullion after the fact.

1988 Calgary Olympic silver coins are worth less than face value in bullion.

I think that the point is to touch them... about 2012!

Sport PM Coins

I started right this year to buy PM coins.
At the beginning I bought bullion coins, just as investment.

After a while i noticed the first ever 1kg silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. It has been coined for the olympic games of Vancouver 2010.
http://www.mint.ca/royalcanadianmint...ies/623317.htm
I like sport and I found out that there are only about a dozen kilo silver coins commemorative of sport events like Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup.
I have been able to buy all of them (but one: a Belarus edition), and I hope to be able to buy the two that are going to be minted next year.
So I'll have the complete collection :D !

For the price issue, well... it all depends on the number of coins that have been issued.

The Australian kilo silver coin for Sydney 2000 is the first one of this kind to have been minted, as far as I know, and it's easy to compare prices in time. The coins minted were 20.000 and so it is still not difficult to find it at good prices, especially in Australia.

The oval shaped coin for the Rugby World Cup costed 1.300 Euro, when ordered and bought from the France mint Monnaie de Paris, but it has been minted in only 299 pieces.
If you watch the English distributor site
http://www.royalmint.com/PackedSets/RWC7SPK.aspx
you will see that it has been sold out at the price of 1.295 British Pounds (roughly 1.900 Euro).
I don't think it will be easy to find one at less than 2.000 Euro from next January, after all the speculators will have sold them.

Opting for the numismatic mode of collecting coins, hence, means a completely different approach from the investment in bullion: (i) finding a theme and following it, (ii) being ready to over-pay for the missing piece, (iii) a very long-term point of view in keeping the physical thing.

I've got a bunch...

All bought at metal value OR LESS, 1980 Lake Placid coins (2) 1/2 ounces of .9167 purity for a heck of a lot less than spot ( think kruggerrands or Eagles 1/2 oz ).:confused_ma: Or ten years from now I'll be picking these coins out of the junk box.:thumpdownDamn, I missed a set.http://cgi.ebay.com/LAKE-PLACID-1980...QQcmdZViewItem

olympic coins from USA and canada are always the biggest commem issues and never are scarce or rare. Chinese are not likely to do anything different. dont pay a premium for these coins, I say to myself.
